To Win Her Favor by Tamera Alexander Blog Tour & Book Review + Enter to Win a Kindle Fire!

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Litfuse Group in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

-A gifted rider in a world where ladies never race, Maggie Linden is determined that her horse will become a champion. But the one man who could help her has vowed to stay away from thoroughbred racing forever. An Irishman far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He's come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and begin farming, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he'd wagered, especially when Maggie Linden's father makes him an offer he shouldn't accept yet cannot possibly refuse. Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the inaugural Peyton Stakes, the richest race ever run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance---and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder---Maggie's father, aging, yet wily as ever, makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail---Maggie must marry a man she's never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.

My thoughts-

I love historical fiction, but I have a tendency to reach for books set in regency era England or during WWII, but when I read the book summary on the back of To Win Her Favor, I knew that this was going to be a book I wanted to read. I like to think I am pretty well versed in American history, but I learned some new things while reading through this novel. We all know of the plight of slaves in the south, but I had no idea that many foreigners were treated pretty badly too, specifically the Irish in Nashville during the Civil War era. Of course, the harsh treatment of any person because of their skin color or nationality is appalling, but we need to remember these things that happened as hard as they can be to fathom. To Win Her Favor did a great job of bringing to life the atrocities of this time period, as well as women's rights (or lack thereof). I enjoyed the aspect of Maggie being a Thoroughbred trainer and the whole storyline about the races. Another interesting aspect of the book was a marriage of convenience that takes place between strangers Maggie and Cullen and how they cope with trying to get to know each other andputting preconceived notions about each other aside. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance novels.
